ABaCoDe offers a project which has the elaboration of a basketball program as the main axis of development. The influence of sports on international development is often underestimated and ABaCoDe believes that basketball can contribute to the athletic and social development of youths, enabling them to learn important values towards self-accomplishment. A basketball court is a social gathering place. It serves social purposes as well as it is a learning space outside of school.
The service our organization offers is essentially the teaching of basketball skills which leads to instil a variety of values and life skills. While providing coaching staff to teach kids basketball, ABaCoDe also holds workshops addressing various day-to-day challenges and issues affecting the youth.
Training coaching staff allows us to pass our knowledge of basketball and our love for the game. Moreover, we continuously recruit and train basketball players which helps raise the level of basketball in Uganda. Basketball provides a general positive environment free of conflict and violence and it promotes the basketball culture of sportsmanship, hard work, and discipline based on respect towards others.
On a long term basis, we wish to improve the quality of life of young Africans through this project. Scholarships to those who excel on and off the court are eventually, once funds have been raised and managed, a main goal as well.
Leadership — children can act as agents of change for their communities;
Teamwork — change occurs when all work hand-in-hand to achieve a common goal;
Commitment — teamwork requires personal sacrifices for the benefit of the team;
Respect — with different backgrounds, skills, and expectations; respect is a team’s bonding agent;
Self-esteem — through hard-work, feedback, and personal growth, children build self-esteem that one day will allow them to stand up for their beliefs and resist peer-pressure.
